I am an inspirational speaker, recovery advocate, and someone who's spent four decades trying to answer one question:

Michael’s Life Journey
In 1985, a car accident left me paralyzed from the neck down.
Doctors weren't certain I'd walk again. From that hospital bed, I made the decision that's carried through everything since: choose Perseverance over discouragement.
I rebuilt the use of my body, and then I cycled 10,000 miles across America.
A proof to myself as much as anyone, that obstacles don’t get to decide what happens next.
That ride became Ride to Recovery, an organization I founded
to visit 33 rehabilitation hospitals, not for the achievement of it, but to encourage patients, support their families, and raise awareness for spinal cord injury advocacy. Service has been at the center of everything I've built since.
Since that day, I've tried to become living proof that adversity doesn't have the final word.
Hope isn't something I just speak about, it's something I've had to embody and hand to every person I've worked with. Underneath all of it is my Faith: the belief that our greatest challenges are often the very things that reveal our GREATEST PURPOSE.
Now based in Wilmington, North Carolina, I refused to let my injury define me.
I made it the platform: coaching tennis to a USTA North Carolina Coach of the Year honors, teaching a generation of students and speaking to people that needed to hear exactly what I'd learned. That's Resilience. Turning the setback into whatever comes next.
Forty years in, the throughline hasn't moved.
Cycling, teaching, coaching, writing, published my Memoir: The Viewfinder, and speaking, every one of it has pointed at the same word: Purpose. This was never about a single comeback. It's been a lifetime of purposeful reinvention.
I stopped asking why this happened to me a long time ago.
The question that's mattered ever since is simpler: what can I do with what happened to me?
